All bus services in Burnie and surrounds are changing on 17 January 2021.
You need to get ready to change with us.
The new network has been designed by the Department of State Growth. It is based on a review from 2017 and 2018, and public consultation in late 2019.
Key changes include:
- Improved reliability and minimised transfer times with new timetables
- Faster travel times by taking direct routes and main roads
- A simpler network with fewer route variations
- More Sunday and public holiday services
- Updated route numbers for state-wide consistency

Why are things changing?
The Tasmanian Government has reviewed all general access and school bus services in Burnie, Devonport and the North-West and West Coasts.
Is it just Metro?
No. All general access services are changing in Burnie, Devonport, and regional centres like Latrobe, Ulverstone, Wynyard and Smithton. Some school bus services are changing.

What public consultation was done?
The Department of State Growth consulted with the community in 2017, 2018, and 2019 to understand local transport needs.

Changes by area
Acton
Two new circular routes will replace Metro’s current route 12 between Burnie and Upper Burnie via Park Grove, Montello and Acton.
Route 192 will operate in a clockwise direction from Cattley St to Upper Burnie and Acton, returning to Cattley St via Montello and Park Grove. Route 193 will operate in an anti-clockwise direction from Cattley St to Park Grove and Montello, returning to Cattley St via Acton and Upper Burnie.
Because these routes travel via Thorne Street, Acton will have significantly more services and ability to connect to other destinations.
Routes 192, 193, 194 and 195 have been designed to travel past the Burnie Child and Family Centre on Thorne Street.
Brooklyn and Romaine
New route 196 will replace Metro’s current routes 32 and 54 that travel via Brooklyn, and 32, 34, 36, 37, and 54 that travel via Romaine. Route 196 will operate seven days a week via the Upper Burnie shopping centre and Hillcrest, linking Brooklyn and Romaine with the Burnie Aquatic Centre.
All services to/from Brooklyn will travel via Romaine, Upper Burnie and Hillcrest. Services through Brooklyn will operate in a clockwise direction via Collins Street, Flinders Street, Wembley Street and Exhibition Street, and through Romaine via Manuka Drive.
The connection between Brooklyn and South Burnie via Brooklyn Road (currently route 32) will be withdrawn.
Emu Heights and Havenview
A new route 191 will replace Metro’s current routes 32, 34, 36 and 37. Route 191 will operate seven days a week and travel via Three Mile Line, the Acton Child and Family Centre in Thorne St, and Upper Burnie, with select services via Parklands High School. A new terminus has been constructed in Wattle Lane to support the new route.
Services through Havenview will travel via Old Surrey Rd in each direction and will no longer travel via McPhee St.
The loop service currently provided by route 37 will no longer operate.
Emu Heights buses will no longer travel via Romaine.
Hillcrest
Hillcrest will be services by the new route 196 between Cattley St and Brooklyn via Romaine and Upper Burnie, which will operate seven days a week.
To make the route more direct, services will travel straight along The Boulevard, using some new bus stops, rather than via Verelle Street, Mark Street and Grenville Street.
Hillcrest will no longer be included in Metro’s Emu Heights route.
Latrobe and Devonport
A new North-West Express route 708 will operate between Burnie and Devonport, operated by Merseylink Coaches. This will replace the existing Route 85 service operated by Merseylink.
Montello
Two new circular routes will replace Metro’s current route 12 between Burnie and Upper Burnie via Park Grove, Montello and Acton.
Route 192 will operate in a clockwise direction from Cattley St to Upper Burnie and Acton, returning to Cattley St via Montello and Park Grove. Route 193 will operate in an anti-clockwise direction from Cattley St to Park Grove and Montello, returning to Cattley St via Acton and Upper Burnie.
The number of weekday Metro services from Burnie to Montello will reduce from 11 to six.
Mooreville Road, Hospitals and Park Grove
Services via Mooreville Road, Brickport Road and the Hospitals will operate seven days a week.
Two new circular routes will replace Metro’s current routes 40/41 and 50/51. New routes 194 and 195 will travel via Thorne Street in Acton to better connect the local community with the Burnie Child and Family Centre. As a consequence, only Wiseman Street will now be included on the circular routes that travel via Hellyer College, the Hospitals and Park Grove.
Wright Street, Kentish Drive, Woniora Road and Three Mile Line will be serviced by new route 191. Route 191 travels between Cattley St, Havenview and Emu Heights via Thorne St and Upper Burnie to provide links to the Burnie Child and Family Centre and Upper Burnie shops.
To travel from Wright Street, Kentish Drive, Woniora Road and Three Mile Line to Hellyer College, the University of Tasmania, Hospitals and Park Grove, connect to route 194 by:
- walking to Wiseman St or Thorne St
- catching route 191 and transferring at Thorne Street, Upper Burnie or Cattley Street
Penguin, Sulphur Creek, Heybridge and Wivenhoe
A new route 190 will replace Metro’s current routes 70, 74, 75, 78 and 79. Route 190 will travel direct via South Road instead of via West Ulverstone, and via South Burnie commercial and medical facilities in Reeves Street, Wellington Street and Wilson Street. Ulverstone will be serviced by Merseylink Coaches routes 180 and 182.
A new North-West Express route 708 will operate between Burnie and Devonport, operated by Merseylink Coaches. This service will service Penguin from a new bus stop on Preservation Drive at the corner of Main Rd.
The number of Metro services between Burnie, Wivenhoe, Heybridge, Sulphur Creek and Penguin will reduce from ten to four on weekdays, and from three to two on Saturday.
Shorewell Park
All services will operate seven days a week.
Two new circular routes will replace Metro’s current routes40/41 and 50/51. New routes 194 and 195 will travel via Thorne Street in Acton to better connect the local community with the Burnie Child and Family Centre. As a consequence, only Wiseman Street will now be included on the circular routes that travel via Hellyer College, the Hospitals and Park Grove.

- walking to Wiseman St or Thorne St
- catching route 191 and transferring at Thorne Street, Upper Burnie or Cattley Street
Somerset and Wynyard
Wynyard and Somerset services will operate seven days a week.
New route 197 will replace Metro’s current routes 60, 61, 65, 66, 67 and 68, which will include some variations for services operating on school days only
The route through East Wynyard will travel via Bowick Street, Lockett Street, Daphne Street and Martin Street in each direction.
The route between Jackson Street and York Street West Wynyard will travel via Exhibition Link, Saunders Street, Gibbons Street, Hales Street and Inglis Street in both directions.
New bus stops will be installed to support the changes to the route.
Ulverstone
A new North-West Express route 708 will operate between Burnie and Devonport via Ulverstone, operated by Merseylink Coaches.
A new route 190 will replace Metro’s current routes 70, 74, 75, 78 and 79. Route 190 will travel direct via South Road instead of via West Ulverstone (Amy Street, Tingha Way, Queen Street etc.). West Ulverstone will be serviced by Merseylink Coaches routes 180 and 182.
The number of Metro services between Burnie and Ulverstone via Penguin will reduce from nine to four on weekdays, and from three to two on Saturday.
